With the semester ending in a few weeks, many students are planning to return home for summer break. This is especially important if you will be returning home to those who have not had a chance to get vaccinated yet. Laying low is similar to a small self-imposed quarantine. For example, order items for pick-up or delivery rather than running into the store yourself. This is especially important when you are returning home or planning to meet up with loved ones. If you want to make plans to reunite with some besties this summer, laying low can help decrease your risk of infecting your favorite people.

Every time you move to a new environment, you bring whatever germs you had from your living space into your new community. This is how the virus is spread to new communities. It is also important to lay low for two weeks once you have gotten to your destination.

Again, this means limiting the of close contacts that you have and being extra aware of your interactions with others. Consider wearing a mask around the house for the first two weeks, set up protocols for sharing a bathroom safely , and avoid sharing your personal belongings. When everyone returned to WSU at the end of summer break last year , we had— like other colleges in our area— large increases in positive cases which made for a rocky start to the fall semester.

W e all need to continue to follow COVID guidance of masking up , backing up , and washing up all summer long, w hether you are staying here in Winona or planning to return home for summer break. Continue to stay home and g et tested when you are feeling ill and to get vaccinated when an opportunity is made available to you. Can we count on you to stay safe all summer long? If yes , we can set ourselves up for a great fall semester.
